| Cast | Johnny Depp Frank Langella Lena Olin Emmanuelle Seigner
| Notes | Superb thriller which shows how you can trust Polanski and Depp more than some others unnamed to produce an entertaining and interesting film. Depp is once again a detective (cf. Sleepy Hollow) this time a "book detective" and he is charged with authenticating a 17th century Venetian book called The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows. There is one copy which has the power to invoke the devil. The story is silly but the execution isn't. One book dealer, Baroness Kessler, is in an electric wheelchair and is a right arm below elbow amputee.
