| Cast | Gary Cooper Teresa Wright Walter Brennan Dan Duryea
| Notes | B/W. Story of baseball player Lou Gehrig who had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis later called Lou Gehrig's disease by Americans. Corny and stereotyped biopic. Cooper looks too old (he was 40 when he made the film). This is a homespun tale of a yokel who is going to be an engineer because that's what his mum wants (traditionally matriarchal family here). When he becomes a famous baseball player he promises 2 home runs for "the little cripple boy". There has to be a better film about Lou Gehrig which avoids the formulation and constraint of 40s biopics. At the time it must have been inspiring but today is very dated. Better to look at the biographies below and see "A Love Affair: The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig Story" (1978 TV film). Biography of Lou Gehrig at: http://www.totalbaseball.com/story/person/player/g/gehrl101/gehrl101.htm And at www.nmia.com/~browns/gehrig
