| Notes | B/W. A medical student with a club foot (talipes) becomes infatuated with a vulgar and deceitful Cockney waitress. Davis is powerful, some say over the top, as she manipulates the poor lad. She even tells him she could never love a "cripple". "You're a cripple, a cripple", She says. He is ruined by her, giving up his studies and becoming ill. He is nursed by another woman, inherits money, completes his studies and has his clubfoot surgically corrected. Then he learns Davis is dying of syphilis in a charity ward but she dies before he can see her. Davis' first major role. Reckoned to be the best version. From then novel by W. Somerset Maugham Re-make in 1946 (not listed) See also 1964 below.
