| Notes | Classic intelligent adventure film when 4 townies take a canoe trip down a river soon to be dammed. At the beginning when the group first meet Appalachian(?) backwoods people there is the duelling banjos scene in which one of the group plays with a young boy with learning difficulties. In fact he never speaks and it is unclear what his condition is. Almost all the woods people are portrayed as being "retarded". The intent appears to be partly to show the group in an alien environment, partly to build up the horror aspect, and partly because, I guess, nobody was bothered to represent them otherwise. From the novel by James Dickey (who wrote the script and plays a sheriff).
