Title | What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) | Alternative/Original Title | | Disability | Learning difficulty/ Autism | Country | USA | Length | 117 | Genre | Drama | Rating | 4 | Director | Lasse Hallstrom
| Cast | Johnny Depp Juliette Lewis Mary Steenburgen Kevin Tighe Leonardo Di Caprio
| Notes | Gilbert (Depp) looks after his 17 year old brother, Arnie who has learning difficulties. Their father has committed suicide, their mother is all of 35 stone and lives on the sofa. Gilbert is having an affair with a married woman (Steenburgen) until a girl, Becky, arrives in town. A brilliant film. Depp and Lewis are on top form but Di Caprio is also wonderful as Arnie. We could add to the list of disabilities -- obesity, their mother is certainly disabled by her weight and dies during the film. If I were to recommend just one film in this category this would be it. From the novel by Peter Hedges
