| Notes | Starting in 1991 in China the cousin, Zhongliang, of the beautiful Pang Ruyi (Gong Li) arrives from the provinces to stay with Ruyi, her sister-in-law, Xiuyi, and Xiuyi's husband. The cousin is treated like a servant and is abused especially by the opium addicted husband. But the husband is left in a vegative state after an overdose of opium. The films moves to the 1920s where Zhongliang has become involved with gangsters. Ruyi's paralysed brother has died and she is in charge. But the head of the gang Zhongliang is involved with wants him to return to the estate of Ruyi and get his hands on her wealth. He does return and once again finds himself in love with her. However Duanwu who has been helping her run the estate is also in love with her. Ruyi loves Zhongliang but is constrained by her responsibilities and Zhongliang returns to Shanghai.
