Title | Proud Ones, The (1956) | Alternative/Original Title | | Disability | General | Country | USA | Length | 94 | Genre | Western | Rating | 2 | Director | Robert D. Webb
| Cast | Robert Ryan Virginia Mayo Jeffrey Hunter Robert Middleton Walter Brennan
| Notes | Ryan is disabled sheriff. Cliched western resembling Howard Hawks "Rio Bravo" and even has Walter Brennan as the gaoler. But this was made 3 years before that classic. The town of which Ryan is sheriff is faced with its first invasion by cowboys on a cattle drive. There's conflict between Ryan and the owner of a new saloon who turns out to be the very person who was responsible for Ryan leaving his last job as sheriff. There's also conflict of a different type with the long suffering woman in waiting (Mayo). And there's the young gunman who is out for revenge thinking Ryan killed his father without reason. Ryan has attacks of dizziness and his vision is blurred when he bends over at crucial moments. The doctor tells him it is caused by pressure on the optic nerve. But it's really pressure on us the audience as we wonder whether or not Ryan will kill his man.
