| Notes | Set in a mining town Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in late 1940s. This film tries so hard to be convincing in its portrait of the period but for me just doesn't succeed. All the pieces are in place but the whole doesn't gel. The story is vague, Helena Bonham Carter's accent is awful and most of the time you wonder what she's going to do with her dress she fiddles with it so much. When she is romanced by a newcomer, Neil, she really starts to bounce around. Her grandpa who appears to be 'bed-bound' is unable to speak and needs a knock on the back every now and again. I presume he's an ex-miner and has lung disease. Though I'm not sure how the bang on the back helps. From stories by Sheldon Currie.
