| Notes | An evangelist's travelling show set up camp in a small Kansas town when their coach breaks down. Jonas (Steve Martin) is a complete phoney but through his meticulously planned deviousness he dupes most of the town. Only the sheriff is hostilely cynical. The son of a waitress whom Jonas fancies has been unable to walk without sticks after a car accident. He regains the use of his legs because he believes in Jonas. By the end long awaited rain which the whole town has prayed for is pouring down. Jonas who knows the miracles are not his leaves town. I consider this a thoroughly entertaining film with great performances all round. But the satire against evangelism including the 'miracles' doesn't raise any penetrating questions. More fun than 'Elmer Gantry' (1960)
