| Notes | Quite wonderful film about a teenage boy (Sean Penn) a bit of a daredevil who meets his father for the first time and discovers his father is leader of a gang of thieves. Of course the impressionable kid wants to follow in his father's footsteps. And we see a side of criminal activity in detail that's not too common. The gang's speciality is stealing farm equipment. At first there is no violence except implied but when the gang is threatened with betrayal the father cold bloodedly kills the weak but devious snitch. At this point the son sees the evil in his father. The strength of this film is in the superb performances of Sean Penn and Christopher Walken with a strong supporting cast including Christopher Penn. When David Straithairn who plays one of the gang is introduced to the son there's a throwaway remark that's he epileptic. But so far as I saw this never impinged during the film in any way.
