| Notes | A wonderful film with fine performances from Hurt and Davis. I must read the book. Hurt a travel writer with a difference ( he writes for tourists who want to avoid other tourists), loses his son and retreats into a shell. His wife, Turner, leaves him. But when off abroad he takes his dog to kennels where he meets the dippy Davis. She targets him as a partner and father for her son. Hurt doesn't respond initially but eventually they're living together though Hurt is still withdrawn. But with the extroverted good sense of Davis and an improvement in his relations with his eccentric family he discovers renewed involvement with people. Only a peripheral claim to inclusion in this list, mainly the allergies of Davis' son (an illness rather than a disability but affecting his growth). Also the mental state of Hurt's family, eccentricity being a euphemism for their social incapacities. We might also see Hurt as a metaphor for our own alienation (temporary, permanent, periodic ) resulting from disability. But I may be just a sucker for a good romance. From Anne Tyler's novel of same name
