| Cast | Marlene Dietrich John Lodge Sam Jaffe Louise Dresser
| Notes | B/W The story of Catherine the Great who was forced into an arranged marriage with the Grand Duke Peter who was quite mad ("a royal half-wit"). She finds romance with Count Alexei but he two-times her with her mother-in-law, the Empress Elizabeth who is already trouble enough. But Elizabeth dies and Catherine becomes Empress and with determination becomes more powerful than her husband who would happily assassinate her. Beautifully photographed and Dietrich looks stunning though style wins over content. Among the opulence of the court are a number of dwarves. And the black servant of the Grand Duke is a hunchback. Catherine's story is also told in Catherine the Great (1934).
