| Notes | At the end of WWII teenagers find an unexploded bomb on the beach which then explodes and kills all but one who is then called a saint and capable of miracles. Fed up with this she stows away on a ship for America but is found and raped and put ashore in Ireland. She finds she's pregnant. After a brief affair with an immigration officer she is looked after by his family. Her son, Frankie, is a dwarf. When the family moves she goes to America with one of the sailors from the ship she stowed away on. He says he wasn't one of those who raped her and has come to Ireland because he wanted to know what happened to her. It turns out his wife has left him. He persuades her to return with him but immediately on arrival she wants to go back to Ireland. Though he has befriended Frankie, Frankie remains isolated. As an adult he writes about his experiences, becomes a best selling author but doesn't find happiness until he meets again the daughter of the immigration officer. The film shifts seamlessly from the past to the present day and is well acted by the young and old Frankie. There is good supporting acting except for the mother who lacks character. An enjoyable, interesting and touching film. From the novel by Chet Raymo, The Dork of Cork. Produced by Noel Pearson who made My Left Foot.
