Reed is a trapper who's missed the auction but gets a woman with a speaking impairment for a thousand dollars (she is not deaf). And they go off into the wilderness. Reed bullies and blusters in his usual manner and kills every animal in sight while Tushingham as the wife remains docile. He calls her "rabbit". But after a number of adventures for him and some soul searching for her the relationship softens. She has won independence and confidence.
