| Notes | This is the story of the romance between Dashiell Hammett and Lillian Hellman. Dashiell Hammett wrote The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man. The former was twice made into a film, the 1941 version with Humphrey Bogart becoming a classic. The Thin Man became a series of films of outstanding quality with William Powell and Myrna Loy. A small part of Hammett's life was previously seen in Julia (1977). Lillian Hellman wrote screenplays and plays including These Three (1936), The Little Foxes (1941), and Watch on the Rhine (1943). Their refusal to marry would hardly be noticed these days but in the 1930s/40s was a matter for comment. During the 1950s McCarthy witch hunt Hammett despite having served in both World Wars was accused of being a communist and sent to prison for six months because he would not say where the funds came from for the Civil Right Congress. Hellman was blacklisted because she would not name her left wing associates saying "I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year's fashions." Hammett never wrote again and died from a combination of tubercolosis and lung cancer. Hellman went on to write Toys in the Attic (1963) and The Chase (1966) and as well the book on which the aforementioned Julia was based. A good film if you already know the story and are familiar with Hammet and Hellman especially so because of the performances of Shephard and Davis.
