Title | Doctor, The (1991) | Alternative/Original Title | | Disability | Cancer | Country | USA | Length | 125 | Genre | Hospital Drama | Rating | 4 | Director | Randa Haines
| Cast | William Hurt Christine Lahti Elizabeth Perkins Charlie Korsmo Wendy Crewson Bill Macy Mandy Patinkin
| Notes | A laid-back, arrogant surgeon (William Hurt, typecast again in a caring role??) learns he has throat cancer. The shoe on the other foot he discovers what it's like to be a patient in his own hospital. Excellent performances, especially Hurt, Lahti and Perkins (a fellow patient). From the director of 'Children of a Lesser God'. Follows the process with attention to detail; the waiting involved, the small print of hospital insurance, the cold-shoulder approach from some staff. The spiritual healing is handled by his relationship (platonic) with Perkins who is dying from a brain tumour. Not only is Hurt cured but he becomes a better person, even his marriage is refreshed. Slightly goody- goody but well worth seeing. After book by Dr. Ed. Rosenbaum 'A Taste of My Own Medicine'
