| Notes | This is one of those ironic films in which no one wins. The best example is The Treasure of Sierra Madre. Other examples but which have question marks at the end are The Italian Job and the recent Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It's not a particularly easy genre to get right. And as soon as Bobby (Penn) arrives in the small town of Superior and gets involved with the locals we're reminded strongly of Red Rock West. He's only there because his car has broken down and the local mechanic (Thornton) has got him over a barrel. Just a leery glance at a woman (Lopez) walking along the street gets him into a helter-skelter of trouble. Bobby has already lost the tops of two fingers to gangsters to whom he is indebted and are the reason for his present journey to Las Vegas. This is quite a pretentious film but not in a disabling fashion as we saw in Natural Born Killers. The story's twists and turns (and violence) keep one interested but the real core of the film is the quality of the acting. What the character is that Jon Voight plays is hard to say. He is dressed shabbily with long unkempt hair. He wears dark glasses and he's blind. It looks like he might be a veteran but he tells us later that he lost his sight because of a woman who threw acid into his eyes. It's a good performance from him but I'm of the opinion that a blind man who was careless about his appearance wouldn't bother to shave. A bonus is the beautiful music from Enrico Morricone.
