| Notes | Co-production of PBS's American Playhouse from Richard Wright's classic novel of the same name. Though the novel is about a black American driven to accidentally murder a white woman it is a detailed study of what it was like to be a black American living in 1930s Chicago. Bigger Thomas has been showing a white, liberal couple around the black quarter. The woman, Mary, gets really drunk and Bigger helps her home and to bed without her mother knowing the state she's in. But when he's in her room the mother walks in. Bigger afraid of being caught in a white woman's bedroom puts a pillow over Mary's face to keep her quiet and she dies. The irony is that Mary's mother is blind. See also the 1950 version which stars Richard Wright as Bigger Thomas.
