| Notes | B/W Gothic romance set on the Yorkshire moors. Jane, an orphan, goes to work for the overbearing Rochester. Slowly Rochester falls in love with Jane but cannot marry her because he is already married. His insane wife is kept locked in the attic. Jane is sent away and when she returns it is to find that the wife has burned down the mansion and Rochester is blind. His wife dead and himself suitably 'chastised' by his blindness he is free to marry Jane. Elizabeth Taylor appears as an orphan with consumption. From Charlotte Bronte's novel Probably the best version so far. Versions: 1913 1915 1921 USA 1934 UK 1971 USA 1996
