| Notes | Classic film centred around the Vietnam War which is an acute observation of steelworkers living in a Pennsylvanian Russian Orthodox community going to war and returning. This film has the breadth of 'War and Peace' except its subjects are working class Americans. In the first part we see Meryl Streep stamping prices on the goods in the small supermarket where she works. Then follows the marvellously filmed Orthodox wedding and the celebrations. Later the men drink in a tawdry bar and leave for the clear majesty of the mountains. The second part shows the diabolical cruelties of the the war. The final part looks at how the war has affected the men. One of the friends has lost both legs and fallen into despair. Another has stayed in Vietnam playing a game of Russian roulette which he was forced to while a prisoner. Now he does it for money and because his mind has been disturbed by the time he spent as a prisoner.
