NotesFor me the English title means nothing and it is the French title which evokes all the atmosphere of this brilliant film. At heart it is a psychological thriller but in the hands of Chabrol, in the presence of the beautiful teacher Audran and the dark faced butcher Yanne, in the narrow streets of a small village and among the chattering children in the school playground something almost poetic is created. As love grows between the teacher and the butcher so does suspicion. The first viewing will hold you with the suspense even though the pace is slow, mellifluous if one can pretentiously borrow a musical phrase. A second viewing you can spare a moment for the clues to the butcher's character, understand why the teacher doesn't want to believe the tactile clues. Still wonder at the end does she still love him.
