NotesA superbly uplifting film despite its sadness and tragedy. This picture of working class youths growing up in America is perhaps superior to any other in this respect. But the scenes in the army mental hospital are painful viewing. Two friends return from Vietnam, one facially disfigured, the other mentally. A quirky, difficult film made engaging by the quality of the acting and directing. The film concentrates on their pre-war life together. Cage as the man about town, self-confident, sexy, arrogant. Modine, shy, introverted and obsessed with birds. Yet they are close friends, though this friendship weakens in their late teens. You'll see the spoor running through the film of the psychiatrist/writer R.D. Laing if you remember him. From William Wharton's novel.
