NotesB/W, Silent Love among the poor c. Paris, 1830s. Begging, starving artists struggle for their art. Mimi, in love, does embroidery to allow Rodolphe to write his play. Marcel is a painter, Schaunard is a musician and Colline is a philosopher. In the way of tragedy Rodolphe unjustly accuses Mimi of being unfaithful. She has a coughing fit and is diagnosed with tuberculosis. Rodolphe goes for help but when he returns she is gone leaving a note telling him she will return when his play is a success. Of course the play is feted but Mimi who has been working in a factory has collapsed and is dying. Rodolphe not joining in the first night celebrations pines for Mimi calling out her name. Miraculously he's heard by Mimi. She rises from her sick bed and tries to reach him. These scenes which include her being dragged behind a wagon until she can no longer hold on would kill a fit person. Of course she gets to him in time to die in his arms. Based on the novel by Henry Murger (and not Puccini's opera). In the novel Mimi is shown as selfish, in the film as almost a saint. See also Vie de Boheme, La a.k.a....
