She is the father's adopted daughter though the son doesn't know this. She marries another railway worker but unhappily. The father who is going blind loses his job but gets a job on a funicular railway in the Alps taking his son with him. The son meets again the daughter and her husband leading to tragedy. A seminal film of French cinema.
