NotesA newer generation may catch this film on TV but won't know about the splash the book created. The main debate being about whether the story was true or not. It is an interesting film full of the bestialities of man, or the French to be more precise. Though I wouldn't be surprised if there was a majority vote for sending some of today's criminals to Devil's Island. The initiation of around 7 years in solitary confinement for Papillon is followed by the quite pleasant exile to another island where there are no guards and you can cultivate your own patch. But Papillon never stops anywhere long, except the aforementioned solitary, and its one adventure after another. Hoffman plays a counterfeiter who is very short-sighted and walks with a limp which is about as far as he gets into character. McQueen shows he didn't have the range for this kind of role.
