| Notes | Language Portugese The 19th century Portugese writer Camilo Castelo Branco had an eye disease which eventually led to his being blind. Considering he could no longer write he committed suicide. This sounds rather strange, Milton, the 17th century English poet, became blind and an assistant and his second wife became his amanuensis (he dictated his poems). Paradise Lost was completed, Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes were written after Milton became completely blind.
