NotesColour and B/W. A difficult, complex book turned into a film which has had widely mixed reactions: from Oscar winner to being called deadly boring. The basis of the story is a badly burned victim, Ralph Fiennes, after an air crash in the desert during WWII who isbbeing cared for by a Canadian nurse, Juliette Binoche. There are flashbacks to a love affair with Kristin Scott Thomas. Having now seen this film I've rated it top marks. Those who liked for example 'Sense and Sensibility' or 'The Remains of the Day' I think will like this film. Not a film specifically about disability but the nurse's relationship with the badly burned flyer is thought provoking. The acting is superlative and the movement between 1939 and 1944 is not only smooth but expands our interest and knowledge beyond the sum of the different parts. For those who enjoy the first ten minutes, two hours and forty minutes will not be too long. Wilem Dafoe's character has lost his thumbs after being tortured. One reviewer says that Fiennes' character has amnesia but this is not clear. From the novel by Michael Ondaatje.
